April 2005 - Members Spotlight and Guests Evening

The April meeting of the Andover Women in Business Club began with members having the opportunity to promote their businesses at one of the Club’s networking evenings. Many members displayed their wares, while others took advantage of the occasion to explain what services they had to offer.

Following a successful display in the Andover Library window to promote the meeting and encourage new members, guests swelled the numbers attending and had the chance to meet members and see how the Club works.

Members were warmly welcomed by the Club’s new President, Tessa Makepeace, followed by a delicious hot buffet, provided by the Red Lion Country Inn, Clanville. Members and guests mixed in a happy and relaxed atmosphere and had further opportunities to network around the display tables following dinner.

To replace its monthly speaker, the Club occasionally makes its meeting a Members’ Spotlight evening, giving 5 – 6 of its members the opportunity to talk collectively to those present. The subjects were varied and interesting and fellow members and guests enjoyed learning in greater detail what was on offer from the very diverse range of businesses involved with the Club.

Birgitta Bergsten explained how the products she sells include body energisers and how magnetism produces extra body strength; Jenny Butterworth, a garden designer, described some of her work and how it is possible to benefit from a short consultation about your needs or have a complete plan drawn up as a makeover.

Now in its 20 th year, the work of Bliss Beauty Therapy was described by Larraine Mitchell, explaining how her Salon aims to help women look and feel better and now boasts a new Sensory Cave for special treatments. The symbiotic nature of their businesses was described by Mary Clegg, who runs a successful website, Beecourse, which sells sex aids, and has evolved to sensitively educate middle-ages, middle-England women about sexual health and fulfilment. Bliss Beauty Therapy and Beecourse now work together on a regular basis to offer complementary workshops for women.

Committee Treasurer, Liz Scrace, a self-employed chartered accountant for many years, commented on how appropriate it was that she should be describing her work on 5 th April – the end of the tax year! Lesley Knight extolled the virtues of her air purifier and its benefits to sleep and Suzi Dale, a counsellor working at the Chiros Clinic in Andover, gave the audience an insight into her work, including Stress Management and Assertiveness Training.

The evening was fun and full of energy and several guests signed up to be members on the night. The Club welcomes working women from all professions and already represents a wide range of businesses, but is currently under-represented in the public service sectors, such as Police, Ambulance and Fire. It would be glad to have new members from education, the charity and voluntary sector, engineering, information technology, catering or science, or from the Caring Professions such as – medicine, nursing and care.
