June 2010 - Crimestoppers

The regular meeting of the Andover Women in Business Group came together on the first Tuesday in June, at The Red Lion in Clanville. As well as an opportunity to enjoy a meal and network with fellow members, it was also a chance for the women to hear a fascinating talk by Simon Theobalds, the local representative of the charity Crimestoppers. Simon’s branch covers Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and so much of the content was relevant to our local area of Andover.

The Group were very interested to learn that Crimestoppers’ focus is on the provision of a totally anonymous route by which information about crime can be passed onto the police, with no possibility of the origination of the call being revealed, something that Crimestoppers guarantees absolutely, by a very sophisticated use of technology, including data washing via Canada! It was no surprise to hear that Crimestoppers receives no state funding, but is reliant on a mixture of donations and grants to carry out its good work, plus the willingness of its volunteer workforce.

It was enlightening to hear that Crimestoppers is not just a way of reporting crime, but also takes an active part in campaigning to prevent it, including issues such as domestic violence, which was the subject of a recent report commissioned by the charity. Coincidentally, the report on domestic violence was launched on the same day that Simon addressed the group. The talk concluded with a Q&A session, which gave the members a much better view of an often overlooked charity.

For more information about how to pass on information about crime anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
