August 2009 - CGA LADIES DAY – PARTY IN THE PADDOCK AT NEWBURY RACES

Seven of us from AWIBC decided to attend the races recently. Anoushka Lynes, Sarah-Jayne, Cooper, Caroline Gilham, Annette Hender, Vera Hughes, Stephanie Lovejoy & Wendy Broadbent.

We arrived at 11am and parked in the car park and met up with each other, then went into the Race Grounds for coffee. We sat and admired each other’s lovely outfits and beautiful hats and photos were taken. We purchased some race cards and studied the form and got tips from each other.

We then went back to the cars and started to set up our picnic that Sarah-Jayne had organised and made. It was all very civilised! We all had some champagne and then started to tuck into the delicious food. So much to choose from! Sarah-Jayne, you have missed your vocation in life, you should be an events caterer!!

We starting choosing and discussing who was going to bet on which horse. Then we packed up the picnic and made our way to place our first bet and watch the first race.

Champagne flowed all day while we admired the wonderful outfits and hats being paraded by all the ladies wondering around. There was a ‘Best Hat’ competition that a couple of us entered. Caroline and 11 other ladies were runners up and lined up in the parade ring to see who Miss World was going to pick to win! Caroline’s hat was fantastically colourful which was hired from Stella from Glorious Hats, one of our new members. Vera also hired her hat from Stella. Caroline’s hat was extremely similar to the lady’s hat that won ‘Best hat’ which was great!

We placed many bets and watched the horses in the parade ring before watching the races. We won and lost money and some of us went away breaking even! During the afternoon, we went back to our picnic for cheese and then strawberries and cream. The weather held out for us and turned into a lovely sunny afternoon.

After the last race, Simply Red performed some songs which was slightly surreal after a day at the races but finished of the day perfectly!

All in all a fabulous day which I hope we can repeat again next year and if anyone else is interested in me organising any other events I would be happy to do so.
