May 2009 - Acupuncture with Maureen Phelps

The May meeting was held at the Red Lion Inn, in Clanville. Many members where present and a fair few guests too! The new membership directory was presented and handed out on arrival.

The meeting started with the AWIBC President, Caroline telling us the layout of the evening and introducing new members. Caroline then introduced her business and what it does. Then each member and guest that were present had the opportunity to introduce themselves and their business and talk briefly about what they do and can offer. We either learnt what members and guests do or were refreshed about what people can offer.

We then had our meal and lots of nattering, catching up and networking was done!

After our meal, Maureen Phelps provided us with a wonderfully entertaining presentation about her business, Andover Acupuncture Clinic.

Maureen firstly expressed that she would like to make clear before she started that she did not want us to get the wrong impression of her view of Western medicine. She believes that there is equally a place in our world for both, and would like to see conventional medicine working closely with Eastern medicine for the good of the patient. For instance acupuncture cannot mend broken bones – but it might be able to make speed up the healing process. Whereas something like a headache might easily be helped with acupuncture rather than taking pills.

During Maureen’s presentation, she did some treatment on Claire Muir to show us what some of the treatments are like.

Maureen then asked for volunteers who went up and had an acupuncture needle put in their arm to see what it feltlike.

Everyone was fascinated and we all learnt a lot about how Maureen got to where she is now and how acupuncture can help people.
