March 2009 - It should not happen to a Wedding Photographer

Once again the meeting of the Andover Women in Business Club was bedevilled by inclement weather. After a weekend of sunshine on Tuesday evening we saw the town centre lashed by strong winds and heavy rain. However, notwithstanding the weather over 30 members and guests gathered together for the meeting which was held in the Keystone Hall, East Street.

With a welcome drink and the opportunity to browse the tables displaying the goods and services offered by several of the members the meeting was then opened by the President, Caroline Gilham. There were some notices and reminders of forthcoming events such as the Andover Women in Business Club display to be provided in the Andover Library for the period 23rd March – 4th April which is being co-ordinated by Claire Muir. After a most enjoyable buffet meal several ladies addressed the club either to introduce themselves or notify of forthcoming events which might be of interest to the members. Chief of these was the fact that a team had been put together to compete in the BBC TV show “Eggheads” the team of 6 ladies is to travel to London on 10th March in preparation of a visit to the studios at 7.30 am the following day for the recording of the show. The ladies of the team are looking forward with not a little trepidation to this event!

On to the main event of the evening which was a presentation by Dave Burlison of Burlison Photography. After a brief slideshow demonstrating some of Dave’s work he then described his background, qualifications and how the business came about. With some excellent visual aids, hints and tips about how to grow your business and overcome the challenges in today’s current financial climate Dave then ended the presentation with some amusing and sometimes hilarious anecdotes from his experiences as a Wedding Photographer. For those of the audience contemplating marriage or planning weddings there were some salutary lessons to be learned! The presentation was concluded by the distribution of Burlison Photography “goody” bags which were most gladly received by the members. The vote of thanks was given by Rosie Anderson and lieu of the usual gift to the speaker, Dave had nominated the charity Naomi House to receive a cheque as he said “my wife and I have a beautiful daughter and are so lucky that she is fit and healthy”.

The next meeting is on 7th April at the Abbotts Ann Village Hall and has a theme of Community Shops and where there will also be displays provided by various local businesses. There are many interesting and varied activities coming up and new members are always welcome.
